Centre of Excellence
ITS South Africa established the ITS Centre of Excellence as a delivery mechanism. It is virtual centre that will encourage cooperation with other organisations where there is a possibility of achieving synergy. The ITS CoE will grow its activities to cover five focus areas: education, training and skills development, research, innovation and knowledge management.
The ITS Centre of Excellence will initially focus on education and training in the field of ITS and knowledge management to provide its members with access to topical information and case studies about ITS deployment projects.
The ITS Centre of Excellence is one of two strategic programmes, the other being the biennial i-Transport Conference and Exhibition.
Education
Intelligent Transport Systems is an interdisciplinary area of expertise with ITS practitioners coming from their original “mother disciplines” such as Civil (Traffic and Transportation), Electrical and IT Engineering. ITS has grown into an area of specialisation with several major universities offering post graduation courses in Intelligent Transport Systems.
ITS South Africa is investigation ways to cooperate with local and international universities and technical universities to explore synergies around educational programmes.

Innovation & Development
South Africa has a vibrant ITS industry. Although a lot of technology is imported, there is already a significant element of local innovation and development. Given that South Africa shares many characteristics with similar New World Economies. This opens doors for export local innovations.
Innovation is one of the focus areas that will be developed as the ITS CoE matures.

Research
ITS South Africa encourages research into ITS, in particular if it coincides with its strategic priorities such as: ITS Policy and Institutional Cooperation, ITS Architecture and Standards, Transport-related Safety and Security, Promoting Public Transport, Congestion and Incident Management.
Research is one of the focus areas that will be developed as the ITS CoE matures.
