SC71H standards meeting
June 7, 2012
To prevent the ad-hoc deployment and development of ITS it is important to achieve standardisation of information, communication and control systems in the field of urban and rural surface transportation, traveler information, traffic management, public transport, commercial transport, emergency services and commercial services, generally referred to as Intelligent Transport Systems. This is the mandate of Subcommittee 71 (SC71H) and its Working Groups working under the auspices of the SA Bureau for Standards. SABS SC71H works in alignment with the Technical Committee of the International Standards Organisation for ITS , generally known as ISO/TC 204.
There are five active Working Groups:
- WG 1: ITS architecture
- WG 4: Automatic vehicle and equipment identification
- WG 5: Fee and toll collection (EFC)
- WG 8: Public transport/emergency (including fare payment)
- WG14: Vehicle/Roadway Warning and control systems

ITS South Africa Workshop: Urban Mobility and Congestion Management - 19 June 2012

The next workshop presented by the ITS Centre of Excellence will be on Urban Mobility and Congestion Management. This is scheduled to take place in Pretoria on 19 June 2012. Please note the new date to accommodate a transport event hosted by the MEC for Roads and Transport in Gauteng, MEC Ismail Vadi.

SATC 2012 - GETTING SOUTHERN AFRICA TO WORK

The 31st Southern African Transport Conference (SATC 2012), supported by the South African Ministry and Department of Transport and the Transportation Research Board of the USA, will take place from Monday 9 to Thursday 12 July 2012 at the CSIR International Convention Centre, Pretoria, South Africa.
ITS South Africa AGM

As a Section 21 Company incorporated as a non-profit organisation, ITS South Africa holds an Annual General Meeting to elect new members to the Board of Directors. This AGM is a breakfast event with a keynote speaker addressing a topic of interest as part of the AGM. Please diarise Thursday 16 August as the date of the AGM.

ITS South Africa Workshop & Site Visits: ITS Tools to Improve Public Transport Operations

Public transport is a key challenge in the package of finding better transport solutions for South Africa. ITS South Africa will host a workshop on ITS Tools to Improve Public Transport Operations on 11-12 September in Durban in conjunction with the eThekwini Transport Authority.

The eThekwini Transport Authority is shaping its strategic plan with several new transport projects -- with significant ITS components -- are in the pipeline. ETA HoD Thami Manyathi will talk about this at a breakfast Members Meeting in Durban on 2 October 2012.

ITS South Africa Workshop: Automated Fare Collection (in partnership with MasterCard)

As we experience an increase in the number and scope of public transport projects, it is imperative to deploy enabling Automated Fare Collection systems and there are a number of such systems with many more underway. Deploying AFC systems is not without its share of challenges to support public transport authorities and operators; ITS South Africa will collaborate with MasterCard to host a workshop on AFC Deployment in Johannesburg on 14 November 2012.
